United States: Recent advancements have birthed battery-powered electric dressings that could significantly hasten wound recovery, according to a new study.
In trials involving animals, wounds treated with these electric dressings mended 30 percent more swiftly compared to those dressed with traditional bandages, researchers detailed on August 7 in the journal “Science Advances,” according to HealthDay News.
These innovative dressings could prove transformative in addressing wounds that heal slowly, particularly those stemming from diabetes and other chronic ailments, according to researchers. Such wounds markedly heighten the likelihood of amputation and mortality.
“Our objective was to engineer a more affordable technology that accelerates healing in patients suffering from chronic wounds,” stated Amay Bandodkar, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina State University.
“We also aimed to ensure that this technology is user-friendly enough for home use, rather than being confined to clinical settings,” Bandodkar added in a university press release.

The study is part of a broader initiative funded by the Defense Department, focusing on expediting wound healing through various innovative dressings, researchers noted, as reported by HealthDay.
These electric dressings feature electrodes on one side and a compact water-powered battery on the other, researchers explained.
The dressing is applied so that the electrodes are in contact with the wound, and the battery is activated with a single drop of water. The bandage then generates an electric field for several hours.
“That electric field is crucial, as it’s well established that electric fields expedite healing in chronic wounds,” remarked lead researcher Rajaram Kaveti, a post-doctoral researcher at NC State.
The electrodes are designed to be flexible, allowing them to maintain contact with wounds that are deep or irregularly shaped, researchers mentioned.
“We tested the dressings on diabetic mice, a commonly used model for studying human wound healing,” said lead researcher Maggie Jakus, a doctoral candidate in biomedical engineering at Columbia University.

“We discovered that the electrical stimulation from the device accelerated wound closure, promoted the formation of new blood vessels, and reduced inflammation—indicators of overall improved wound healing,” Jakus added, as per HealthDay.
Significantly, the bandages are cost-effective. “We’re looking at overhead costs of just a couple of dollars per dressing,” Bandodkar noted.
The electric field must be fine-tuned, as per the researchers’ next plan, and produced by the bandage. This is to be done as a preparation for humans clinical trials.
The experts have mentioned that the research is preliminary, and they will surely opt for human research as animal research often pans out.
A professor of surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Center in Boston – Aristidis Veves, who is one of the researcher, stated, “Diabetic foot ulceration is a serious problem that can lead to lower extremity amputations. There is urgent need for new therapeutic approaches, as the last one that was approved by the Food and Drug Administration was developed more than 25 years ago.”
Further, Veves mentioned that this new bandage might “revolutionize the management of diabetic foot ulcers.”
